Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
Narration is in first person and uses flashbacks or flash-forwards to show the audience what happened or what is going to happen. In "Araby" the narrator tells a story from when he was a little boy. He used flashbacks to tell what he remembered as a child. In the poem "My Father in the Navy", the narrator uses flashbacks to describe his father in the navy and how he wanted him to come home!
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
In Mayblum's "The Price We Pay", there are two conflicts. I believe these two conflicts are man vs. man, and man vs. self. An example of man vs. man would be the American people inside the Twin Towers and the terrorists who attacked the building. Even though we are all people, it was the differences between them that caused the terrorists to attack the innocent people inside the Twin Towers. I also believe it was man vs. self because Mayblum himself was confused on what was going on, and he shared his thoughts to the audience about how he was feeling about the situation.

I am writing this journal to you to teach you about the dangers of texting while driving. One reason I want to teach you this is because I have personally been in a wreck with someone who was texting behind the wheel. Another reason for teaching you the results of texting while driving is because there could be serious consequences, like death or jail time. Finally, I want to teach you not to text and drive because I want you to set a good example for your friends and younger siblings so that they too will be safe when getting behind the wheel.

The target audience for this ad is Verizon Wireless customers or people who want to purchase a Blackberry phone. In huge letters at the top of the page it says "Get more Blackberry out of your Blackberry." In the middle of the ad it shows a picture of the phone, and on the bottom right of the page it shows the main functions of the phone, the cost of the phone, and where you can purchase the phone. The purpose of this ad is to inform Verizon users of the new Blackberry phone and of all the different ways you can use it.

One bad advertisement I have seen is probably the Jared advertisements on tv. Jared is apparently a jewlrey store, and in the advertisement there is always an engagement situation and the people around whisper "He went to Jared's" to the person next to them. Then that person whispers it to another person and so on.
I believe this is a bad advertisement because it uses the phrase "He went to Jared's" way to often. So often that it gets annoying to hear. Plus, I don't believe a man is going to rush out to by an engagement ring and purpose to his girlfriend just because of this advertisement. I believe the ad is supposed to target men wanting to purchase jewlrey for there wives or girlfriends, but honestly I think that the ad mainly targets women who want someone to buy them jewlrey. Also, the advertisement doesn't show any other pieces of jewlrey they are selling, just the one ring. It also doesn't give any prices or price range for the product.

A good advertisement I have seen is probably the Fresh Step kitty litter ads. In this one ad, there is a white cat sitting on an orangey-brown couch with its legs crossed and its paw over its mouth. At the bottom of the ad it says "It's hard to find your litter box if you can't smell it." On the bottom right, it has a picture of the product and says odor eliminating. It also gives a website you can go to for more information.
To me, this is a good advertisement because it is cute and funny. Everytime I see one of these ads in a magazine, I always stop to look at it. The cat always seems to catch my eye. I know if I had a cat I would buy this brand of kitty litter. Because of this ad, I remember the brand name. So if I'm out shopping for kitty littler, I will more than likely buy Fresh Step. I know that many people are the same way, so this ad has probably given this company pretty good business from cat owners all over the country.

Kids today are starting to mature at an earlier age. Those we consider children call themselves adults and believe they are old enough to do what they want. The writer gives several examples of tween behaviors. One example was young girls painting on make-up at school without their parents knowing about it. Another example was 11-15 year olds bringing guns to school and killing innocent people. The last example was the middle school 6th grader getting pregnant. The behavior of tweens are getting worse and worse. They are all trying to fit in by wearing designer clothes, wearing a ton of make-up, having sex, and using drugs and alcohol. Kids are participating in activites that you would usually see happening with older teens and young adults. Tweens should definitely not be envolved in these activities.

One example of group think in a dangerous manner would be gangs. People in gangs are involved in murders and such because they are pretty much forced to do so. They have to go along with the other members of the gang. Another example of dangerous group think could be teenage cliques in school. If one group of teens are bullying the other, it could result in killings and bringing weapons in the school or suicide.

In the two short stories "How Far She Went" and "A Rose for Emily", Emily and the granddaughter both share similar characteristics. They both had to deal with the loss of a parent. They both felt abandoned by their loved ones. They also became rebellious toward their family and community. These are just a few similarities between the two short stories.
Emily had to deal with the death of her father, and the granddaughter had to deal with the death of her mother. They both felt abandoned because of the loss of their loved ones. After Emily's father died, she also lost the man she loved. After the granddaughter's mother died, her father sent her to live with her grandmother. They also became rebellious. Emily rebelled against the community by refusing to pay her taxes. The granddaughter rebelled against her grandmother by talking back, running away from home, and running off with random guys on motorcycles.

In the short story "Beauty" by Walker, the woman struggles with her appearance and the way she looks. As a girl, she always thought of herself as beautiful. She talks about reciting poems on Sundays with confidence. People would always talk about how pretty she was. Her sister would also make her dresses that made her feel pretty.
She was always confident and felt beautiful until her brother shot her in the eye with a BB gun. She has trouble seeing out of her eye and it is scarred. After that happened, she started to lose her self-esteem. She starts failing her classes in school, and the other children often picked on her for being different. She just didn't feel beautiful anymore. One day, her daughter asked her about her eye, and she no longer felt self conscious about it. She gained back her confidence and was finally able to be happy again.
