Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
Both stories "My Father in the Navy" and "Araby" use first person narrative. The stories also use sensory details, flashbacks. In the story "My Father in the Navy" the sensory detail used in this story talks about how the family long awaits the return of the father who is in the navy. In "Araby" the flashbacks are how got to the bazzar late and how he feels about Mangan's sister.

Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
I believe that the conflict is man vs. self. I think this way because the man is fighting to find a way out of the building. When his friend refuses to go with the group but asks to send help for him. When he sends people up there for help even though they were on their way up there. He felt he was rushing them and they might have survived.

Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para.
How many students can honestly say they never done drugs before? Well many teens today are doing drugs. Some do it to fit in and some do it to relieve stress they think they have in their lives. Many teens do drugs because maybe they have nothing better to do. Well get out and try to do something that at least won't destroy your life. Some teens do drugs to get attention from their family and friends because they think they don't get enough of it.

Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para
So easy a caveman can do it. GEICO. The audience is people who need insurence that is easy to get. The caveman represents that a if a caveman can get GEICO insurence anyone could get GEICO insurence. The purpose is to sell insurence for people who need easy quite insurence.

Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para
A Clearasil StarClear advertisement. A picture of a girl with long brown hair with really clear skin. A bottle of Clearasil StayClear is on the side of the picture with a memo saying " Clearasil StayClear is gentle, oil-free and conditions your skin. And because it's Clearasil it deep cleans pores too."
I think that this is a bad advertisement because the girl could have used a different product to make her skin clear or she could have naturally clear skin. Just because you put an ad with a girl with clear skin and a bottle of Clearasil ClearSkin next to her doesn't mean she uses that product everyday to get the clear skin that she does have.

Journal Prompt 6. Search the internet or a magazing to find a "good" advertisement. Describe the ad so that a reader may visualize it without seeing the ad. Discuss why you believe the advertisement is good. 2 para
The advertisemnet is a tampax pearl with Serena Williams as the spokes person. Serena Williams and Mother Nature is on the tennis court with Serena Williams with a tennis racket in hand hitting a tennis ball at Mother Nature. Mother Nature is holding a present to say that her monthly gift is here. There is a memo at the bottom of the advertisement saying "Serena Williams isn't about to let Mother Nature's Monthly Gift ruin her game. That's why a champion like her trusts the unique LeakGuard protection of Tampax Pearl."
This is a good advertisement because the ad is saying that taxpax pearl can beat Mother Nature so she can go on and play her daily sport. In the ad Serena will be going doing her routine of playing tennis and Mother Nature will not ruin that when you are wearing tampax peral. It makes it seem like tampax peral can "outsmart" Mother Nature in no matter what you do.

Journal Prompt 7. What social behaviors are teens demonstrating as tweens? What examples does the writer give? 1 para

Some of the social behaviors tweens demonstrate is wearing to much make up, wearing provocative clothes and sexual behavior at a young age. Tweens are trying to act older than what they are. Tweens want to fit into the older crowd and prove that that are cool engouh to hangout with them. Tweens do not need to be doing these things they just need to act their age.

Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para

One example individuals engage in dangerous group think is being apart of gangs or orgainzed crime. People in these orgainzed crimes just kill other people without thinking of the eccfects of those people families; and every memeber does it even though they do not like it just to be apart or that crowd. Another example people engage in dangerous group think is drunk driving. These drunk people do not think anout the effects there dangerous driving will bring on other people and themselves. They fell they have no control over their actions and they being to do dangerous things while drunk driving.
Journal Prompt 9. Discuss one poem and one short story similarity concerning characters, plots, settings, conflicts, or themes. 2 paragraphs

In "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", the grandmother tries to protect her family and herself, but her actions fail. She has disrecpectful grandchildern. The grandchildren were raised by their grandmother. There wasbad men "the Misfit" going to kill them.
In "How Far She Went", the grandmother likes things done her way and that's the way its suppose to go. Like in the other story she has a disrepectful granddaughter, but her granddaughter started to repect her after what she put upon her granddaughter. Like in the other story there was bad men who was trying to kill the grandmother and the granddaughter, but they surivived.

Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs

When she is shot in the eye with a BB gun is what causes her to lose her self-esteem. She believes people will not see her as a cute little girl anymore. She also believes that when people look at her they will just stare at her like she is a freak or werid looking.
She worries to much about what other people think about her. She is also worried about how her daughter will react when she finds out that her mothers eye is different friom everyone eles. Walker relayes to much on her apperence more than anything else. Beauty is not everything in the world.
