A narrative quality that you see in the poem “My Father in the Navy” and in the short story “Araby” is that they both are written in the first person. Both writings use words like I, my, we, and our.Another narrative quality you see is the deep feeling of emotions.In “My Father in the Navy” you feel the love and anticipation of the father’s returning home.In the short story “Araby you get the sense of a young boys secret love for his friend’s sister.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
One area of conflict you see is man vs. self. You see this conflict with Mayblum questioning himself for sending rescue workers quickly to the upper floors to help his friend. Although the rescue team was going to the upper floors anyway; as that was their job, Mayblum felt as if he hurried them to their deaths. You can clearly see that he is at no fault here, but I can also understand how he would take this to heart. The whole event was traumatic and you would probably be sensitive about every detail.

The man in this ad should also have a pretty young woman kissing on him. This ad would be appealing to a wide age range of men. I think no matter what age, all men want to be bigger and wider. In this ad there is this thin confident looking model all dressed up in her high heels and slimming jeans that offer all kinds of support, for her "unfortunate body". She is checking herself out in a mirror to see just how good she looks.
This ad is just horrible to me! First of all the lady is a model that is a size two. I'm sorry, but I don't think that an anorexic woman needs to be the model for jeans that offer tummy control and slimming thigh stretch. I'm sitting here thinking, "what stomach and what thigh problem". Second, I don't like the fact that she is all smiles in the mirror. It's like she is thinking, "I don't really have to wear these jeans for fat women". This was just another ad aimed for "the average" woman, that used a "perfect" model.

This ad shows two little girls riding their bikes through a trail.The trail is full of big green trees and colorful flowers.Both girls look happy and carefree.The ad has a box off to the side giving information about the medicine.
This is a good ad because it uses bright and vibrant colors.It helps that the girls in the ad look to be enjoying themselves even though they have allergies.It also helps that the medicine comes with a pre-measured spoon.It gives you that feeling of added safety when your child this medicine.The add uses green colored writing and this ties back into the whole nature scene.

Girls no longer need their dolls and boys no longer are about thier toy cars. Young kids are giving up their toys and cartoon at a much earlier age than ever before. No longer does a girl ask to have play dates, but instead she wants to get dropped off at the mall, to hang with her friends. Just about every child you see has a cell phone in their hands and they are texting like crazy. I remember a cell phone was something you received when you started dating and driving to use for emergencies. Now it seems like the fewer clothes you have on the better. The girls today like to show off their bodies, whether it be good or bad. The author tells of her own daughter putting up her doll collection and hanging posters of boys on her wall. She also goes on to say how the boys are concerned with their looks and clothing at an earlier age. Hymowitz, also discusses how eating disorders are affecting young girls in elementary school.

One example of dangerous group think is when you have a group of friends out together and if one or two of them are drinking alcohol, more than likely the others will join in on the drinking also. They wouldn't want to be perceived as the rebels of the group, so it's easier to just go along with the flow, even if they don't like drinking alcohol. Another dangerous situation of group think is one that we see in battered women. Woman that suffer abuse at the hands of their mates often feel like they did something to deserve their beatings. They all feel like they must endure the pain and suffering alone, because that is what has been done for years. Group think is a very hard concept to break away from, especially when dealing with family and friends.

In the short stories " A Rose for Emily" and "The Lottery", I saw the theme of small towns and the concept of not wanting to rock the boat. In both stories you have a situation going on in town that all of the town's people kind of question, but no one really does anything about it. In "A Rose for Emily",all the townspeople know that Emily owes taxes, yet she gets away with it year after year. In the story "The Lottery", you get a sense that some of the townspeople are starting to get uncomfortable with having the lottery every year, by some of the comments that are made. Yet, they go on as they do every year without change.
I think that in both stories that the townspeople feel like that they have stay with tradition, because that's how it was done before them. They don't want to be the first one to bring up the doubt out loud and cause attention to be called to themselves. So, nothing ever changes and everyone stays unhappy. This was an all too common problem in both towns.
Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs
In Walker's Beauty, the first thing to cause Alice to lose self confidence is being shot in the eye with a bb gun. She carries around the white glob of a scar on her eye for years. This scar causes her to feel shame and not so pretty anymore. It also makes her feel like she isn't smart anymore. It doesn't help that she is moved and has to go to another school, where she is made fun of by her peers. Also, Alice feels like she is singled out in the family when she is the only one sent back with her grandparents when her mother becomes ill.
Another situation I feel that caused Alice to lose her self-esteem is being shot by her boyfriend when she was pregnant. This would cause her to keep to herself even more and to not let anyone in her life. She even had a problem sharing herself with her child. It was like she was afraid of the rejection that her baby might show toward her. In the end she found out that her scars made her who she was. It made up all the good in her and was there for the world to see.
