Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
I felt both authors used very vivid sensory descriptions, making you feel that you were involved in the story, even feeling the emotions that they felt. The stories also identified the point and developed only those details that advanced the story. Though there was alot of description of emotion and surroundings you did not get lost in it or become bored with the stories.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
His last paragraph described the conflict of America and Democracy vs. the terrorists. I particularly like the description of America being an idea and that democracy won when the first plane was hijacked. For the writer this thought crossing his mind both framed the conflict and resolved it in one fell swoop.

It is my love of being surrounded by the natural beauty and sounds of nature that set me on my career path. It has taken me longer than most to decide what my career will be. I used to think that I just wanted to make lots and lots of money, no matter how much I disliked the work. Soon enough I could retire and not have to worry about working at all. I figured I could just hold my head down and bear it, whatever it may have been. More recently though, I have realized this is not the case. I want to enjoy my work. The money is not the only motivating factor for me anymore. I would much rather enjoy every day of my life, both while I am working and after I retire. That being said, I can think of nothing better than being a park ranger.

"It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken"
This ad should contain should contain pictures of men in the kitchen preparing chicken. It should also include close up shots of steaming juicy chicken that envoke your taste buds or that make you salivate. This ad should also include bright colors thst grab your attention like yellow and red that have been proven to encourage hunger. Obviously your target audience would be men and women of all ages. .
Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para
The product I have chosen is one that is probably everyones cubbard. It is now packaged in a plastic jar with the classic colors red, blue and green on the label. This version looks very creamy but it also comes in a crunchy version as well. It is of course your favorite comfort food and sandwich spread, peanut butter.
I believe this ad does not attempt to reach its historical target audience and only loosely targets those into healthfoods. The ad specifically points to being high in omega-3 which is fine but what are the other nutritional benefits of peanut butter. In the past Jif peanut butter has had the target audience of children and mothers. Mainly focusing on the kids to bug their parents to buy it, but also informing the mother of all the nutritional values of this brand so that she will be more likely to make the purchase.
I believe the ad completely missed the mark and tried to fix something that was not broken.

This ad shows a car run over a pot hole and when it does it causes damage to thye vehicle. The pot hole then proceeds to talk. It says "Oh I am so sorry, let me call my insurance company on my cell phone. Oh wait I am a pot hole, I dont have a cell phone". Souns silly but it is hillarious none the less.
This ad conveys that is not just other drivers or even yourself that you have to watch out for. It makes you feel that you need GEICO auto insurance for those car accidents you can not avoid. The ad is very effective at grabbing your attention and conveying its point through humor. I would assume that everyone could appreciate this ad but the target audience is probably for age 18-35.

In this story the writer describes the bahavior of "tweens" as growing up to fast. This group ,the writer says, is engaging in things historically thought of as teenage behavior. Now 8-12 year olds are wearing tight skimpy clothing, makeup, having sex, using drugs, drinking, and generally rebelling against authority.
Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para
Cults have killed countless numbers of people and wrecked numerous lives. All you have to do is remember Jonestown to see examples of both. Many that lived in jonestown drank the koolaid and gave it to their children while protesting silently in their heads. Those who did live through that final day had to live with that scene in their minds for the rest of their days. Another example would be Charles Manson. He started a cult based on drugs that eventually lead to the murder of several well known people in Las Angeles. In this case the members of the cult did not die but they have spent the rest of their lives behind bars. We could also look at terrorists. This group is blindly devoted to a religion that tells them if they give their life in the name of it that in the after life they will have riches abound.

The young boy in Araby and the young girl in How Far She Went were both coming of age. We saw The boy falling in love for the first time and we saw the girl rebelling against the authority figure that had been put in her life. The young boy was very determined to do whatever it took to get a gift for the girl he had a crush on. The young girl was very determined to whatever it would take to make her grandmother mad enough to send her back to her father.
Both of our characters find out that sometimes going to extremes, for whatever reason, does not always work. They also found out that you can learn alot from it. The boy realized that you cant always make everything go as you want it to. The girl learned that her grandmother loved her very much and would go to any length to protect her.
Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs
The loss of her eye is the main cuase of her loosing her self-esteem. She becomes very self-conscious of the eye and it causes her to withdraw from large parts of her life. Never looking up, she allows people around her to form their own opinions and treat her any way they want to. She no longer thought of herself as that cute little girl and instead thought she was grotesque. She felt as if even her own family had turned their back on her, or at least no longer looked at her the same after that day. She never looked at herself the same again either.
It is obvious that she remembered the day very differently than her brothers and family did. She remembered it as a day that changed her life and in many ways ruined her life. It took her many years of lying to heraself about coming to terms with ther eye before she finally was able to do so. Those words from her childs mouth managed to melt away all the anger, sadness, and frustration she had carried around her whol life. She was suddenly whole and beautiful once again.
