Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.

One of the narration qualities I saw in the poem"My Father in the Navy" by Cofer and the short story"Araby" by Joyce were they both used first person to narrate. The second narration quality I noticed in the poem and short story were the sensory details. They both used flashbacks to tell their story. They both referd back to they past on how they felt when one got to the bazzar late, or how the other felt when they long for thier father to return home from the navy.

Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.

I believe this story was more man vs. man. I feel this way because it takes self control to stay calm in a situation where you dont know whats really going on. The author used exellent sensory details, as you read the story its almost as you can feel your heart race as your reading about the author trying to escape the tower along with thousands of others on 9/11. You almost feel the fear he felt that day. He had a lot of patients and self control to remain calm and help others try to escape and save as many lives as he could on the way out.

Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para.

My dear son I'm writing this journal in hopes to help you in your journey through life as an adult. You have lost your father at an early age, and you are now the man of the house. I know that was hard for you at twelve years old, but your father taught you all you need to know to be a young man. Life is full of decisions that we have to make and I want to guide you to make the right ones. Your father's death ended with me having to make the most difficult decision off my life, one I hope you never have to make.

Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para
"It melts in your mouth, not in your hands", the slogan for M&M's, targets anyone who enjoys candy. They want you to eat them before they melt in your hand. If you enjoy chocolate candies with hard shells they dont want you holding them they want you to eat them! They used good sensory details by getting you to think of how gross it is to have melted chocolate in your hands.
