Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.

Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.

I believe the conflict in Mayblum’s “A price to pay” is man vs. nature. One example of this is the element of fire burning in the building and name was trying to escape. During this time he fights the smoke and fire trying to get down the stairs. He tears his shirt into 3 pieces and dunks it into water to put over his mouth so that he can make it through the smoke. It seems like every which way he went he had to turn and go a different way because of the fire and smoke, but they finally made it out safe and sound.

Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para.

College
As a student, life changes considerably from high school to college life. College gives you more responsibility. Also, it gives you freedom of choice, like picking your class where as in high school there chose for you. Finally, while in college you have more demanding schoolwork that is very time consuming.

Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para

With a name like Smuckers....it has to be good.
I think this advertisement would have a little kid in it eating a jelly sandwich. The kid would have a big smile on his face. The kid is sitting with his family having a picnik. I think the target audience would be moms who want to feed their children something tastes good and is good for them.

Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para

One bad advertisement I’ve seen is the burger king commercial where mothers gather in a car and start chasing the “king”. Their saying that Burger King food is so good that mothers start chasing the king because his food is so good.
This is not an advertisement you want your children to see. The message in this ad is that its ok to run down someone in your car because your jealous of their cooking skills, as long as your friends are in agreement.

Journal Prompt 6. Search the internet or a magazing to find a "good" advertisement. Describe the ad so that a reader may visualize it without seeing the ad. Discuss why you believe the advertisement is good. 2 para

In this advertisement, the target audience to me, is famous women, also people who like Beyonce and want to smell like her. I also feel that this advertisement is directed toward females of black ethnicity. As well as, women who have a lot of money. Beyonce is in the background singing. The bottle looks really expensive like diamonds would look.
I feel that the purpose of this advertisement is to get people to buy this perfume because it will make them feel good and make women think that this perfume is like wearing diamonds. This perfume has a very strong smell to it. It kind of reminds of someone older wearing it and not Beyonce. I think this advertisement is an effective ad.
