Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
Flashback and the use of sensory details are the two narration qualities that both Cofer and Joyce use in their poem and short story. In the poem "My Father in the Navy", Cofer describes her father in such a way that you can have a clear image of what he looks like in his white navy uniform; to Cofer, he looks like an angel. According to her descriptions, you can almost feel the emotion she and her family felt while he was away.She is also telling the reader about how her, her mother and her brother would hold vigils and wait for the day of his arrival. The whole entire poem is a flashback because the author is telling us about an instance that happened when she was a child. As i stated before, Joyce's short story "Araby" uses the same two narration qualities. The author describes the creapy old house in such a way that he painted such a vivid picture in my mind as to what it really looked like. Again, flashback is used in this story. I know that because the autor is telling us about an instance of when he was a little boy.

Wow. "The Price We Pay" is a powerful story! It definately opens your eyes to how it TRULY impacted the peoples lives who actually were apart of that awful day. I believe on September 11, everyone had to deal with all three possible conflicts; man vs. man, man vs.nature, and man vs. self. In the story, Adam Mayblum seems to touch more on the conflict he had within himself. Does he find his friend on the 87th floor, or does he keep on going? Does he help the heavyset man in stairwell 53, or does he find a fireman on the way down to help him? All of these thoughts and more were going through his mind. Meanwhile, he is trying to save his own life. At the end of the story, he briefly mentions how he somehow feels responsible for the deaths of the firemen who he sent to fetch his friends. But then, man vs. man takes over. He soon realizes it is not his fault. The blame is on the hell-bound terrorists.

Dear Prospective Employer,
I am writing to you this letter in the hopes for the opportunity to work on your staff. For years, I have researched, studied, and participated in the field of sports medicine. Over that time, I have grown to love and respect the challenge that it brings. For that reason, I have chosen sports therapy as my future career. As you know, the world of medicine can be very unpredictable and very challenging at times. That is why I believe people will be the key components in surviving this industry. Passion for people, in my opinion, is the most important. You have to humble yourself and always put the patients needs first. The next important component is patience. In this profession, you never know what obstacle will be placed in your path, therefore, you have to have the patience to endure it. Lastly, and the most obvious thing, is that you have to have a passion for not only the people playing the game, but the game itself. Daily communication with the people who spend their lives on a sports field will take place. It will make the job a whole lot more enjoyable if you understand their love for the game; the same love you have to help them.

The slogan I chose for this journal was pulled out of a magazine I received at work. The magazine is called The Island Sun Times: News and Education for Salon Tanning Professionals. This magazines’ main target audience is the tanning salon owners all around the nation. Its purpose is to inform and educate professionals about all of the latest tanning lotions and appliances. As I was flipping through the pages, one as stood out the most. It was an ad for the Soltron Tanning Co.; one of the most popular tanning bed makers known throughout the tanning industry. In the middle of the brightly colored page was the slogan “ Feel the Difference.” There are sixteen different beds to choose from. With all of the variety of beds to choose from, all having fun names like Kiwi King, Peach Party, and Charming Cherry, buyers should have no problem finding which beds look best in their salons and which ones best fit the needs of their customers.

Okay, i believe we have all seen some pretty bad ads in either a magazine on or the television. Some companies just don't let their creative juices flow, and in the end, they get burnt. As i was flipping through a magazine at work the other day, i came across an ad for a new tanning bed lotion. This is what the page looked like: There was a girl who was VERY pale sitting on a swing. In her hand, she had the new tanning lotion that was suppose to be advertised. But there was one problem, the label wasn't even facing the camera. So, so far, all we have is a pasty white girl holding a bottle of lotion that is suppose to make you darker. That was it; that was the advertisement. Not very creative, and it didn't even make sense.
Now, if I was doing an advertisement for that bottle of tanning lotion, i believe i would have been more creative. First off, i would have used a girl who was already tan; not somebody who needs a tan. From an advertisement standpoint, a person looking to get a nice tan would look up to the girl on the page with a tan instead of the pasty white girl. Second, i would have a background on the page; something tropical and fun. People tan all year around to keep that glow that they have in the summer time. Therefore, the ad should be bright and colorful. It should remind people of that summer they spent having fun in the sun. even if it is twenty below zero outside.

PROUDLY INTRODUCING WHITE SMILE; TEETH WHITENING. REDEFINED. As i was flipping through the pages, that exact phrase is what caught my eye. That's not to mention the huge set of glistening, white teeth eating a juicy red apple that covers the entire page; there was no way I could miss this ad. At the bottom of the page, there was more information about this teeth whitening system: UV Free/FDA Compliant.Clean, refreshing smile in just 20 minutes, minimum four to eight shades whiter guaranteed, a fraction of the cost of existing treatments.
Just like a good advertisement is suppose to do, this ad made me want to know more about the product. With all the huge pictures and the catchy phrases written in bold letters, i knew that there was something amazing that the advertiser wanted me to know. This ad gave great information without being too wordy. That way, I heard the information I needed to hear without getting too bored hearing a bunch of stuff that I did not care about. Another smart move the advertiser made was informing the consumer that their product was cheaper that the existing competitors. With today's economy being as tough as it it, it's important that consumers know they can look and feel their best without having to spend a bunch of money. In general, this was a terrific advertisement.

The author pointed out some very interesting facts that I have never realized; I guess that’s because I grew up in the “tween generation”. In a nutshell, the social behaviors demonstrated by tweens are focused on growing up quicker. It is that awkward transition period in their lives where they want to grow up, but they just don’t know how to appreciate being a kid while they can. Some of the general behaviors demonstrated female tweens is appearance, boys, and being sassy. Some of the general behaviors demonstrated by male tweens is also appearance, girls, and being considered cool. Psychologists have found that he early age tween movement has been affected by the media-driven marketplace and the absentee parents.Journal
Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. This story demonstrates quite a few examples of groupthink. One example of a dangerous groupthink is that fact that everyone in the town goes along with this gambling. We can tell that not This was a very different short story that is full of people demonstrating everybody, if anybody at all, wanted to even do it. It serves no purpose; just a dangerous, old, town tradition. Another example of groupthink is the whole idea of stoning people. They are forced to gamble to see who the person is to get stoned. The story was unclear on if they get stoned to DEATH, but either way, it’s a weird tradition.

In "How Far She Went" and "A Rose for Emily" there is a common conflict that has come to light in each story. The first common conflict is death. In the story : How far She Went", the death was the death of the dog and in "A Rose for Emily", Emily murdered her boyfriend. The differences are that the grandmother murdered the dog to save her and her granddaughter's life and Emily murdered her boyfriend because she was crazy.. Both of these stories are very similar because they both commit murder. Neither Emily nor the granddaughter were able to cope with the death in a healthy way.
Emily and the grandmother are very similar. They both had to kill someone or something they loved in order to benefit. from it. Emily believed that it was to her benefit to kill her boyfriend Homer because she believed that he would leave her and send her back to the life of being poor. The grandmother still mourns the death of her daughter by visiting her gravesite and now mourns the death of her dog.

As a young girl, Alice walker was looked at as "beautiful". Her pretty dresses, sweet hair bows, and her sense of sassiness drew in a crowd. At the age of eight, Alice Walker hit a stage: a tomboy stage. She started dressing a little more grungy as she started looking up to and idolizing her older brothers. One day, while Alice was playing outside with her brothers and their new BB guns, an accident occurred. He brother accidentely shot her in the eye with one of the BB pellets. This caused permanent blindness in her right eye and along with placing a blotchy white patch in the middle of her eyeball. From this point on, Alice became very self contience. She mentiones in the story that she prayed every night not to regain her sight again, but to regain her beauty. Looks meant alot to Alice; they had since she was a very young girl. At the young age of fourteen, Alices' "glob" was removed from her eye and she felt beautiful again. She then felt like a totally different person. Alice regains her confindence and also learns a lesson; glob or no glob, she is beautiful inside and out.
