Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.

One narration quality that "My Father in the Navy" and "Araby" have is that they both are written in first-person. The second narration quality in both of the autobiographicals they express some type of love and adoration. In "My Father in the Navy" the boy adored his friend's sister and in "Araby" the husband adored his wife and kids. Also in both narratives there was a longing of love. The boy longed to love his friend's sister and the wife longed her love for her husband while he was away.

Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.

Adam Mayblum experienced man vs. nature. His conflict was with all the debris that was falling as the towers were being attacked. He had to work his way from the 87th floor to the 1st floor in a short time. With all the debris and people this task was difficult. His resolution to his conflict was to stay calm and move from floor to floor quickly. While moving from floor to floor he helped who he could at the time and sent help for the ones he couldn't. He managed to make it out of the tower alive to see his family and another day.

Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para.

As an employee at the local nursing home, one of my patients, Natalie, has asked me to capture her memoris as a part of her final wishes. Natalie has been diagnosed with breast cancer for a year now. The doctors tell her she only has about six months to live. One of her and her family's final wishes is for me to capture her most joyful moment in life and put it in a story. Her most joyful time in life is Christmas time each year.

Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para

Good to the last drop. Maxwell House Coffee is famous for this slogan. This advertisement targets all coffee drinkers of all ages. In the commercials they have men and women enjoying this delicious coffee before they are off to work in the mornings. The purpose for this ad as well as the commercials is for people to enjoy coffee by choosing Maxwell House Coffee.

Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para

I recently saw an advertisement in a magazine about breast cancer research. The ad is a picture of a nude, older women wrapped in a red sheet. There is white writing over lapping the picture of the older woman that tells a little about breast cancer and the research being done. Some of the writing is in bold, white lettering to emphasize the meaning of the advertisement.

This is a bad advertisement because the way the woman is pictured people can not tell that this ad is about breast cancer research until they read the writing. There is no indication that it is to do with breast cancer other than the writing. If the writing was not on the ad, people would think the ad was for body lotion or possibly a new fragrance.

Journal Prompt 6. Search the internet or a magazing to find a "good" advertisement. Describe the ad so that a reader may visualize it without seeing the ad. Discuss why you believe the advertisement is good. 2 para

Givenchy, the new fragrance for men by Justin Timberlake is a good advertisement. In this ad Justin is pictured in a recording studio listening to some music. He has one headphone pressed against his right ear observing the sound. While doing that he is wearing a nice, light colored button down shirt with a darker colored vest over it. The bottle of fragrance is in the far right corner of the page. It also states that the fragrance is located at Macy’s.

This is a good advertisement because it clearly shows exactly what they are selling. In some ads people can not really tell what the company is trying to sell. They also used a celebrity, Justin Timberlake, to enhance the advertisement. Many people buy and use products that feature a celebrity.

Journal Prompt 7. What social behaviors are teens demonstrating as tweens? What examples does the writer give? 1 para

Some social behaviors tweens demonstrate are that they are conscious about their images; they are into drugs and sex, and also eating disorders. The writer stated that a fifth grade teacher from Ohio discovered a fifth grade boy and girl in the bushes at recess. Also within the past six years the number of eighth graders who smoke marijuana has doubled. Therapists are seeing an increase in the number of elementary girls who are becoming anorexic.

Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para

In Jackson’s “The Lottery” the town engages in groupthink. One example of this was that each family followed the town ritual. They did everything the same every year. Another example is when they drew their slips of paper. The men drew for the family and if the man was unable to then the woman drew. Tessie felt as if her husband did not get enough time to draw his slip of paper. Everyone had the same amount of time to draw.

Journal Prompt 9. Discuss one poem and one short story similarity concerning characters, plots, settings, conflicts, or themes. 2 paragraphs

In the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” there is a grandmother who is helping raise her grandchildren. The grandchildren are very disrespectful and rude to her throughout the story. Also the family is encountered by three men. One was an escaped fugitive called “The Misfit”. While the family is held up by these men the grandmother insists that everyone pray over and over again. In the end the three men kill the grandmother and her whole family.

In the story “How Far She Went” there is also a grandmother and a grandchild. Her grand-daughter was also very disrespectful and rude to her. In this story the grandmother and grand-daughter are encountered by two biker-men. The grandmother prayed for help and to show her grand-daughter that she loved her. In the end the grandmother sacrificed her dog to save her grand-daughter.

Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs

In “Walker’s Beauty”, Alice, is this cute and smart little girl who accidentally gets shot in the eye by a BB pellet. After the accident she lost her vision in that eye. There was scar tissue left around the eye that was shot. She did not accept the way she looked anymore. She lost all of her self-esteem.

Alice
lost her self-esteem because of what happened to her. She would walk around with her head down and even hide from relatives who came to visit. Children at her school were very mean to her. They called her names which just made her feel horrible about herself. Her accident truly changed how she felt about herself and how she acted around other people.
