Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
The two short stories "My Father in the Navy" and "Araby" both have the narrative quality of conflict. In "My Father in the Navy" the mom and the young boy both are at conflict cause they both want the father to be home instead of at sea, but the father must do his duty and leave them for a while. In "Araby" The boy as a major crush on his friends sister, but he is to scared to speak to her. The next narrative quality they both display is flashback. They are both telling these stories when they are grown up about their childhood. That is two narrative qualities that both these stories have in them.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
I believe the conflict that is displayed the most in the story "The Price We Pay" is man versus self. From the beginning the narrator is in a fight with him self on what to do to get out of the building. The first conflict he has with him self is what happened to the building in the first place. Then as he is going down the stairs he finds a man who needs help. He could have just left him there, but instead he found the man help. Which makes him a hero. Then, when the other building collapses it gets dark in his building. He could have just freaked out and lost it, but he kept his head and got out of the build and saved his own life.

The teenage year for a child is some of the hardest, most stressful time in their lives. Even though this is suppose to be a fun time in your life, you must think of the consequences of your actions first. This is a time where drugs and alcohol become big in a teens life, and could ruin it before their life even gets started. Teenage pregnancy is another thing that occurs and could make a teenager’s life more stressful than it already is. As you get older and school starts to get tougher, many teenagers try to take the easy way out by dropping out of school, however; this choice could cost you dearly in the long run.

The advertising slogan for the United States Army "Be All You Can Be" is a very good slogan for the army. This slogan should reach out to men and women who want to better their future and prove that they can do something with their lives. The ad should have a hung man and woman in their army uniform preforming something that goes with the army. Maybe graduating from boot camp. The sensory details should be bold lettering. Dark colors on the ad, and some army stuff in it: weapons, camouflage, and tanks for example. The purpose of this ad is to get people to join the army, and help defend their country. Also, to show the pride and respect that comes along with defending your country.

The Quaker Mini Delights ad that I found in a magazine is an ad that does not cover its whole point clearly. The ad itself has the mine delight snack on it with the bag open and the food spilled all over the page. It has a cheesy saying that says this snacks can take away your want for a cupcake. In the bottom corner of the page it describes what the product does, but its in really small writing so it does not really pop out at you or catch your attention. The background of the page is white, and is pretty dull.
I believe this ad is a bad ad because its suppose to be a diet snack that is actually good. In the ad they have this huge picture of the snack which looks very fatting instead of health. The saying at the top comparing it to cupcakes even makes it sound fatting. Then, in the bottom corner they have this little paragraph that tells about how this product makes you lose weight. You would never pay attention to this paragraph if you were just flipping through a magazine. I think theyu should take away the cheesy saying and make the paragraph bigger so people kn ow what the product is actually for.

The Philip Stern Teslar ad that I found in a magazine is a very good ad. It describes its product very well if you ask me. You can tell the watch is very expensive and they portray that in their ad. This ad has a very clear target market which is upper class society cause of how much it cost. This watch is suppose to reduce your tension, and make you relax in harmony which they make very clear with the peaceful forest seen in the background., the wording that describes the watch is a big enough size so it catches your eye, and you pay attention to it.
I think this ad is a good ad because it clearly describes the watch. It lets you know that it is very expensive, and that not everyone on in the United States can just go out and buy one of these watches. It is also suppose to make you calm down and relax by easing the tension inside of you. This is very clear by the forest seen in the background, and the big lettering that says feeling of harmony. Also, the writing that describes the watch is big enough to were it captures your attention so that you will read it.

The age group between that teenage stage and the young child age is called tweens. These children arent mature enough to be a teenager yet, but the have out grown the young children stage. These kids may sometimes act like a teenager and be very mature for such a young age. They may also want to act older then they are. Like wearing make up or for the boys starting to lift weights. Then other times you may wonder how old they really are. At these times the girls may want to play with their barbie dolls, and the guys there action figures. The age group of a tween is a pretty hard group tp figure out because you don’t really know what they enjoy doing also you don’t know how they will act on a certain day.

What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para Many groups of people these days take part in group thinking. Some examples would be High schoool football games on Friday nights or gang violence. On Friday night s high school football teams get together and play each other. Some of these games can grow very violent. Like rival games. Munford and Millington have been told to hate each other since wewere very young. With being told this many kids think that they must fight with the other team just because they said something to them. So this makes it a very violent situation. Also, gangs display this charcteristic. Gang think that their gang is the best, and that they peolple of other gangs should be killed. So we have all this fighting between gangs which can get crazy. All the members of one gang think they are better then the other one. So they fight each other to see whos better. Wat they don’t realize is that we are all people and all desevre a chance to live without being scared for our lives. This is two examples of peole doing group thinking.

Many short stories seem like they are way different, but really they are very similar. In the short story “Araby” the young boy in the story wants to go and get the girl a gift so he can confess his love to her. Up to this point he has been scared to talk to her, so he feels like this will give him the confidence to do so. The young boy becomes so obsessed with getting the gift that he will go at all cost to get it. In the end, the boy finds out that he has waited too long, and that his dreams are not what he had planned for them to be.
The short story “A Rose for Emily” is quite similar because she also because obsessed with a member of the opposite sex. Emily in the town has always kept to herself, and does not come out much in society. She becomes obsessed with this guy in the community so much that she actually keeps him up in a room of her house, and she stills sleeps with him even after he has died. The townspeople do not find the man until after Emily herself dies, and the townspeople search the house. So, as you can see both of the short stories seem way different, but are actually a like. The young boy in “Araby” and Emily in “ A Rose for Emily” both become so obsessed with a crush that they will do anything to keep this person on their lives.

In the short story "Beauty" the young girl Walker loses here self-esteem first because she is shot in the eye with a bb gun by her brother. When Walker goes to the doctors she develops a thing over her eye. The doctor tells Walker and the parents that if one of her eyes goes blind then the other one will also. Walker feels like when she looks up everyone is concentrating on her eye instead of her. Because of this she does not look up very much. Walker was a very pretty girl before the shooting so this shooting really affects her deeply.
Walker and her family move to a different county, which makes her have to go to a different school. At the new school, many of the people make fun of Walker because they do not understand her eye problem. Walker even gets into a fight with one of the guys because he calls her a very bad name. Walker still does not lift her head at the new school, so she does not make to many friends. At night before Walker goes to bed she talks bad about her eye, and makes fun of it. Walker is sent back to live with her grandparents, where she knows the kids at the school. This kids do not make fun of her, so she feels more comfortable.
