Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
When reading these pieces I found that there are two narration qualities that are used in both the poem and short story that really stood out to me. For example, the use of first person point of view is used in the narrating of both the poem, "My Father in the Navy, and the short story, "Araby". The narrarators in both use words like "I" and "me" that show that the story or poem is being told in first person. Also, the use of flashback shows the similarities between the two pieces. Both of the narrators told the story based on a past experience or memory. The story and poem reflect how the narrator felt about the past experience.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
In Mayblum’s “The Price We Pay”, the conflict of man vs. self is very vividly seen through out the entire story. Mayblum describes how he along with hundreds of others had to control the fear and panic inside themselves in order to survive and escape Tower 1 during the events of 9/11. He had to decide within himself whether or not go back and help others or keep making his way down the stairwell. Also, even though Mayblum and other survivors knew very little about the attacks that were occurring they managed to keep themselves calm and as focused as possible in order to make it safely down the stairwells. Man vs. self was also displayed when some others made the decision to help rescue others who were not as in control of the panic and fear that they were experiencing. Even though many lives were lost on that day, many lives were saved due to the self control that many displayed while escaping the tower right before it collapsed. The death toll would have been even higher if man had not been able to conquer the conflict within him in order to survive.

Choosing a career path is a decision that should never be taken lightly. When I decided to become a Registered Nurse, I knew that I had chosen a career in which I could help better the lives of patients and still find room for advancement in the medical field. The nursing field also provides an assortment of challenges in which my knowledge and experience are constantly tested on a daily basis. I knew that by becoming a Registered Nurse that I would always have a fulfilling career of which I could be proud.

Sprite uses the advertising slogan “Obey your thirst”. This slogan’s target audience is extremely broad. Using thirst, Sprite is able to reach a large audience by targeting a particular feeling that every person experiences at one time or another. Telling consumers to “Obey your thirst”, allows this company to target and sell the product top virtually anyone. The word obey is a command that orders the consumer to drink Sprite in order to quench their thirst.

A recent set of commercials I have seen lately is for a company called GoDaddy.com. This site sells things such as domain names and web space. The company’s advertisements usual surround a scenario that includes a beautiful, seductive woman. These women are always scantily clad in tank top and tight shirts that advertise GoDaddy.com. The commercial always ends with the viewer wondering how the scenario ended. However, the spokes model tells the viewer at the end of the commercial to visit the site to see how the scenario ended in order to get viewers to visit the site.
In my opinion, GoDaddy.com needs to really focus on a better and more tactful way to market the use of their site. These advertisements really focus on risqué situations that only really advertise the website by posting their logo all over the women’s tiny outfits. These commercials are extremely sexual driven and always show women in an untactful manner. The commercials are very bad advertisement simply for the fact that they focus more on the inappropriate situation and less on the actual service the website provides.

A good advertisement that I have recently seen is for Suave hair products. The recent commercials focus on an ordinary mother that is dealing with everyday tasks and multiple children. The advertisement shows how Suave products really perform and hold up during a hectic typical day for everyday women. The commercials always touch base on the fact that the product is reasonably low priced and very affordable compared to products that give the consumer similar results.
I believe Suave product commercials are very effective. They are so effective that I even tried the products. The products really do hold up during the normal stressful day. The products are also very well priced like stated in the commercials. So in my opinion, any commercial that advertises something that is completely true and is also a very reliable product is an example of good advertising.

Tween girls are very concerned about their “look.” They do not dress like young ladies, but like grown women. Tween girls wear make up and even dye their hair. Tween boys, on the other hand, are becoming juvenile delinquents. Although children under 15 still represent a minority of juvenile arrests, numbers have grown dramatically over the past 20 years. These examples only demonstrate a few disturbing social behaviors of American tweens.

One example of groupthink in our society would be cults. In cults people do things based on the ideas of the group. Cults draw people in and then twist that person’s views to fit the ideas of the group or cult. The people involved in these cults never stand up for their personal views or question the ideas or teachings of the cult for fear they will be singled out or that they will anger members of the group. Another example of groupthink is the treatment of women in other cultures. In certain cultures around the world women are treated as though they are not entitled to the same rights as men. Women in these cultures are not allowed to receive an education or to seek employment. These cultures degrade women and others in these cultures just go along with the unfair treatment of women. No one in these cultures question the way women are treated.

The grandmothers in two of the stories both feel very strongly about their opinions and own ways of doing things. For example, in the short story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, the grandmother character is very strong-willed about wanting to go to east Tennessee. She tries every suggestion she can think of to persuade her family to change their minds about going to Florida. Another example, in the short story “How Far She Went”, the grandmother in this story continues on with her routine no matter what disruption her granddaughter causes for her. Both of these examples display the similar temperaments of each grandmother from the stories.
The grandmothers also have disrespectful grandchildren who try to test their limits. In the story “How Far She Went” for example, the grandmother has a rebellious granddaughter that has been sent to live with her after the death of her mother. The granddaughter defies her grandmother every chance she gets. She runs off continually without letting her grandmother know where she is going. The granddaughter does this through out the story until she finds herself in a situation where only her grandmother can save her. Another example of disrespectful grandchildren is in the story “A Good Man Is Hard to Find.” The grandmother finds herself in a similar relationship with her grandchildren. The two grandchildren in this story ignore and question most things their grandmother says to them. They were also rude and disorderly. The grandchildren in both stories seem to have no respect for adults.

When she was a young girl she was very confident and prideful about her beauty. She was told by everyone that she was so pretty and smart. She loved to hear the compliments people would give her and this would only further boost her ego. One day, her brother shot her in the eye with a BB gun. This is disfigured her eye causing a white mass to cover it that resembled cataracts. She was ashamed and did not want anyone to see her eye. She became withdrawn and stayed in her room whenever company would visit her home. She was her that her daddy never chose her to go with him anymore. She thought it was because she wasn't beautiful anymore. At school the other children were very cruel to her and she was even in a fight over the name calling. After the fight, the other children left her alone.
Eventually, she has the white mass removed from her eye. Her self-esteem improves and she starts to feel a lot better about herself. She begins to excel at school and even gets married and has a child of her own. Because she has always put so much emphasis on beauty she becomes an angry person. She does not see the beauty within herself because she has also put so much emphasis on outer beauty. One day her daughter tells her that her eye looks like the world. She then realizes that she has been beautiful all along and it grateful for the life lesson she has learned from the experience.
