Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para. In both stories the narrators used first person flash back and sensory details. In “Araby” the narrator talks about when he was a kid. He also talks about having a crush on his friend’s sister. He used numerous sensory details when he was talking about the rusty bicycle pump, the sky being the color of ever changing violet, the dark muddy lanes, and the dark odorous stables. In “My Father in the Navy” the narrator is remembering her father coming home from the navy. The narrator used sensory details when talking about the white cloth of his uniform, the round cap on his head like a halo, and the neon sign.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para. I think the story had two different conflicts, man vs man and man vs self. I think the main conflict was man vs self because he felt extremely bad about not being able to help everyone. You could tell that it was excruciatingly hard for him to leave his friend behind when he refused to leave with the rest of them. Then he blamed himself for sending the firefighters up to get him when he found out that they had perished also.
Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para. My children, I am writing this journal to you to teach you about the devastating effects of alcoholism. One reason I want to teach you about alcoholism is that it has been the cause of death of numerous friends and family members. Another motive for teaching you is that alcoholism can obliterate your health. In addition, I want to inform you about the ways alcoholism can destroy families. Furthermore, I want to educate you about the consequences of alcoholism because it can lead to many legal and professional issues. Finally, I want be certain that you are aware of the repercussions of drinking.
Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para
Burger King uses the advertising slogan “Have it Your Way”. This slogan targets a wide variety of people. An ad for this slogan should contain a variety of people in Burger King ordering their food. There should be lots of different options available for the customers to have on or with their food. The purpose of this ad would be to make people want to eat Burger King because of all the options available. Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para
I found an ad for toilet paper that was not very good .The top half of the advertisement is off white with a slogan in large purple print reading “Even as a kid, you knew three was more than two”. The off white top section of the advertisement then blends into the middle portion of the advertisement that has faded white, wood planks giving the appearance of a rustic wooden table. Sitting on top of the table is a pale pink bowl that has two scoops of creamy white ice cream in it and a bright white bowl that has two scoops of pale pink ice cream in it. In the bottom right hand corner of the advertisement there is a small picture of the product with a money back guarantee label on it In the extreme bottom left hand side of the advertisement it has the company’s copyright. In the extreme bottom right hand side of the advertisement there is a small icon with light blue illegibly small print reading “Quilted Northern Ultra Plush is flushable and safe for standard septic and sewer systems”. The advertisement is not especially effective for several different reasons. One reason would be because it would not actually catch a viewer’s eye if they were looking through a magazine and flipped to this advertisement. The second reason would be because when you first look at the advertisement the viewer would think it is an advertisement for some type of ice cream not toilet paper. Last but not least, would be the reason that the picture is very small compared to the rest of the advertisement; therefore, it does not truly represent the product very well.
Journal Prompt 6. Search the internet or a magazing to find a "good" advertisement. Describe the ad so that a reader may visualize it without seeing the ad. Discuss why you believe the advertisement is good. 2 para The ad has a blue background with white snowflakes. There is a slogan across the top of the page saying “A fridge with its own freezer aisle”. There is a stainless steel refrigerator in the middle of the page with the doors open so that it is showing the inside of the refrigerator. At the bottom of the page there is a whirlpool icon and an energy saver logo.
I think this is a good advertisement because it showcases the product very well. The ad also catches your eye when you are flipping through a magazine. Another reason I think this is a good ad is because the primary focus on the page is the refrigerator. This ad made me want to go purchase a refrigerator like this one. Journal Prompt 7. What social behaviors are teens demonstrating as tweens? What examples does the writer give? 1 para Tweens are demonstrating many different behaviors. They are now looking up to older celebrities. They are also wearing makeup more and dressing like they are much older than they really are. Tween boys are becoming juvenile delinquents more often. They are also developing the teenager attitude. Overall tweens are just growing up much too fast.
Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para Gangs engage in group think. People in gangs are afraid to go against the group. People in gangs also feel empowered by those around them so they may do things they typically would not if they were alone. People in cults also engage in group think. They seem to not be able to think on their own at all. An example of this would be when the people in cults participate in the mass suicides.
Journal Prompt 9. Discuss one poem and one short story similarity concerning characters, plots, settings, conflicts, or themes. 2 paragraphs In the stories How Far She Went and A Rose for Emily there is conflict in the reasons why they committed murder. Emily killed her boyfriend out of selfishness just because she was scared of him leaving her. Whereas the grandmother from How Far She Went killed her dog to save the lives of herself and her granddaughter. There is similarity in the stories because both women are grieving. Emily grieves for the boyfriend she killed by keeping his body in a room in her house and lying with it. The grandmother mourns her daughter that died by tending her gravesite and placing flowers there and she also mourns the dog she killed by holding him after the fact. Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs She lost her self esteem after she was shot in the eye by her brother’s bb gun. This was particularly hard for her because everyone had always told her how cute she was and now she had an ugly white glob on her eye. After the accident her father also quit choosing her to take on his outings so this made her feel even worse about it. After the accident she would not look up when she went anywhere because she was scared of what people would think. Then when she started a new school the kids there were very unruly and hateful. A lot of the kids made fun of her and even called her bad names. So this was another blow to her self esteem. HOME: Composition 1010 J01
