Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
Both stories are told in first person narrative, "Araby", told by the young man as a memory when he was struggling to become a man. "My Father in the Navy" told as a daughters memory of a father who was missed greatly and welcomed home with much love. They both have very vivid sensory descriptions keeping your imagination alive as your reading.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
"The Price We Pay", held much conflict for man vs. self. Adam Mayblum struggled with who to help and who to leave behind. He had doubts if some of his friends and co-workers would make it out alive. Adam had conflicts within himself for sending the fire department rescue workers to their death, simply by telling them where other people needing help were in the building.

I am writing this journal to my precious daughter to help you understand the meaning of spousal abuse. Spousal abuse comes in many forms, one of which is invisible, assaulting you without putting a single bruise on you, yet shattering any self-esteem you may have with words that cut as deep as any knife. Understanding that someone controlling every aspect of your life robs you of any freedom to make your own decisions in something so trivial as what you might wear or even what you might eat or drink. I hope to erase any mistaken belief that you are obligated to remain in this situation because you grew up in an abusive home.

The Timex ad, It Takes a Licking and Keeps on Ticking, should contain a watch being all but destroyed, possibly under water, or dropping from an airplane, to show how much damage the Timex can take and still run. The target audience would be adults. The sensory details should be very vivid to impress upon the audience how indestructable the Timex truly is. The target audience would be primarily young male using these extreme details.
Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para
The ad is a little skinny guy walking down the street chewing gum. These two other guys appear from out of nowhere and one of them grabs the skinny guy, squeezing him so tight around the waist from behind that he splits his gum across the street. The other guy runs up to the gum picking it up saying it was the only way they could make him chew another piece because the gum was so good and long lasting that the little skinny guy just kept chewing the one piece over and over.
The ad is unbelievable because there is no such gum that has flavor that last forever. The idea of having to force someone to spit out a piece of gum to replace it with another is unrealistic. This is false advertisement to say the least.

The ad is a handsome black haired, blue eyed, tuxedo clad man in his early fifties and a beautiful dark haired woman in a long formal sequined dress. The handsome man is looking intently into the eyes of the beautiful woman and she is returning his loving gaze while holding a small velvet box in her hand.
The handsome black haired man is cupping her hands with his leaving us to imagine what may have come in the box but not for long, for on the ears of the beautiful dark haired woman shining like stars, peeping from under her hair are the most elegant diamonds one could ever hope for.
Journal Prompt 7. What social behaviors are teens demonstrating as tweens? What examples does the writer give? The tweens are trying to grow up way to fast. They wear clothes that are much too skimpy for their age. They wear too much makeup. This all leads to situations they are not ready to deal with. Examples in the story are when her daughter traded her puppy posters and her art pictures for posters of movie stars. She also began reading movie magazines with pictures of her teen idols in them.

Young people in clicks engage in group think. They want to be part of the in crowd so they go along with whoever the leader may be and with whatever the leader might say. They can be cruel to other people who are not in the click. Gangs are the same way. Anyone in a gang goes along with their leader. Anything the leader says or does becomes okay just because they say it is. They break the law and that becomes the norm. Journal Prompt 9. In the short story "How Far She Went" one of the characters was a grandmother, she had a pet, she had to face bad people trying to hurt her loved one. She was the leader of the family and very active for her age. She wasn't always totally sure if she was always doing the right thing when it came to her family. The settings were in the country away from other people.
The other short story was "A Good Man is Hard to Find" where there was also a grandmother. She had a pet also, she also had to face bad people there to hurt her loved ones. She pretty much ran the show in that household also and she was also very active. This story also was set in the country away from people. The difference in the stories one family lived and one family died.

Everyone told her how cute and smart she was. She loved hearing people brag on her. When her brothers shot her in the eye with the bb gun, it disfigured her eye causing a white glob to cover it like a cataract and she said she never looked up again. She did not want anyone to see her ugly eye. She was still the same smart girl she was before but she became withdrawn because of her eye. She would stay in her room if company came. While she was in school other kids were cruel to her one boy called her the one eyed bitch until the day she had enough of him and beat the living daylights out of him. After that he left her alone. She was hurt that her daddy never chose her to go with him anymore after the accident, she felt this was because she wasn't his pretty little girl anymore.
As she got older she went to visit her brother in Boston. He knew how the accident had affected her and wanted to help her. He and his wife made the decision to take Alice to an eye doctor in Boston. The doctor removed the white glob from her eye making it more presentable to other people. This gave Alice back some of her self esteem. She still had some issues with the appearance of her eye but with time and after the birth of her baby girl who one day when she was three years old and after having watched Big Blue Marble a favorite show of hers, said to Alice,"Mommy, where did you get that world in your eye;" Alice decided right there and then, there was a world in her eye and for all it had taught her about shame and anger and inner vision that it was possible to love her eye. She said she became whole again after the incident with her little girl and her eye.
