Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
Both “Araby” and “My Father in the Navy” have conflicts. The conflict in “Araby” is the young boy wants to be with the friend’s sister so badly but he is too nervous to speak to her. In “My Father in the Navy” the conflict is that both the mother and son miss the father who is gone all the time because of work. The second narration quality is a flashback. Both narrators are telling stories from their childhoods and how the stories meant to them.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
I believe that the conflict in “The Price We Pay” is man vs. self. From the beginning the narrator is to making personal choices. He had to make himself stay calm and make rational decisions on the way out of the building. During the story his friend decided to stay behind, and when the situation got worse the narrator made the difficult decision to go back up in search of his friend. This decision could have killed him, but he decided to risk his own safety for a friend. This happened several times on the narrator’s way out of the building. He tried to help other people out of the building and this prevented him from being safe sooner. It takes a lot of courage to put someone else’s safety before your own.

People give up many things in their life when they use drugs. I know this because I used to be a drug addict. My name is Carol and before I hit rock bottom, I was addicted to meth, cocaine, and other hard drugs. The things people give up are different with each person, but in my case I lost my family member’s trust and respect, my daughter, and I almost lost my life. I hope that after listening to my story at least someone will have learned something and think twice about doing drugs.

"The best a man can get" is a slogan than Gillette uses for their razors.The target audience would be men. This slogan appeals to a male's desire to want to look good and to have the best shave they could get. The purpose of this slogan is to appeal to all men and influence them to use their razors.

An example of bad advertisement I have seen is Nivea’s A Touch of Happiness body wash ad in a magazine. The ad has a picture of a man and woman wrapped in each other’s arms. They are outside under what appears to be a waterfall. They are fully clothed but their clothes are soaked and hanging off of them. The slogan says “Beautiful moments are born in the shower.” I think this advertisement is bad because by the photo I thought they were advertising a sexual body oil. I don’t think it is appropriate to use sex as a way to sell any kind of product except products used for sex. Something a simple and innocent as body wash has been portrayed as something sexual. Showering is an indoor activity not outdoors so I’m not sure why they used a waterfall.

An example of a good advertisement is a Slimquick advertisement in a magazine. The ad shows a plump cartoon woman sitting on a bench and greedily holding a loaf of bread that she should be feeding the birds on the ground in front of her. Then there is a second picture of the same cartoon woman but she is a lot skinnier and she is now sharing her bread with the birds. Underneath the pictures the product is featured and it explains how it helps woman lose weight. This is a good advertisement because it takes a situation women go through and made it relatable. The product explains that is it not a diet pill but it’s something that helps the factors that prevent woman from losing weight. It also has a funny picture to catch your eye and make you remember the product.

Girls are trying to look older and more mature.They are trying to do this with more makeup and way to revealing clothes. They care more about their appearance than anything else. With tween boys they are trying to act older. Tween boys are trying to prove they are older and more manly by breaking more rules and doing bad stuff.
Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para
One example of groupthink would be a gang. In gangs the whole purpose is to be accepted and have a sense of belonging or security. In order to maintain this you have to follow the rules. The rules and consquences may be different but in the end the consquences are usually very dangerous and life threatening.Another example would be a cult. In cults everyone does the same thing, acts the same, and may even dress the same. Some of the things they do could be harmful to yourself or to others. With both of these examples it's an unwritten rule to be quiet and do what you are told, and most of the time people follow that rule.
