Open up a Word document. The paste onto that document (hold down the ctrl button on your keyboard and then "V"). Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
"My Father in the Navy" uses first person because the narrator talks about how she, her mother, and her brother waited for her father. It also shows sensory details. The sensory details are how they used his homecomings to compose verses to a siren's song. "Araby" also uses first person. It also uses sensory details. The sensory details are how the narrator feels about Mangan's sister.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
The conflict, I think, would be man vs. man. The example would be when the planes hit the North and South Towers because it's the people in the towers vs. the people who hijacked the planes. The people in the building weren't able to stop them because they didn't have a clue what was going on when the first plane hit. The hijackers knew what was going to happen that day, while everybody else didn't. This to me really shows man vs. man.
Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para.
Students experimentwith many different things because they don't care how it affects them. They try drugs because they see people they admire use drugs. Many students drink alcohol because they think it makes them look cool. They also experiment with sex because their friends have already experimented with it.
Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para
An advertising slogan would be the "Geico: So easy a caveman could do it." The target audience would be anyone that drives and needs car insurance or anyone that wants to switch their company. The sensory details would be where you would be able to see how easy it is to switch and to save money. The purpose of the slogan is to let you know that it wouldn't be hard to get the insurance that you need and that you would be able to save money.
Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your discription could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para
I've seen an advertisement that would make shaving simple. The product is small and it will slide on your hand. You are supposed to be able to rub it across your skin and it's supposed to take the hair off. Mostly women would use this, but men might use it too.
The advertisement is bad because it shows people using it and they say that it works. They don't show you a before and after picture. I have tried this product and it doesn't work. You would have to rub your skin until it became raw. You could be through shaving and you could be doing something else by the time you finish rubbing your skin.
Journal Prompt 6. Search the internet or a magazing to find a "good" advertisement. Describe the ad so that a reader may visualize it without seeing the ad. Discuss why you believe the advertisement is good. 2 para
This advertisement has a woman, who might be a model in it. It looks like she has highlights in her hair and she's wearing something that has different colors on it. This ad is targeting mainly women and make-up artist, but if a guy wanted to use it let him. There are many colors to choose from. If you like highlights for your hair, you would like highlights for your eyes.
I believe it's a good ad because it has some good colors and details in it. The ad tells you what each end of the brush does. You are able to see the writing that was put on the ad which helps you figure out what it does. The ad would attract people because you can take wearing make-up to a whole new level.
Journal Prompt 7. What social behaviors are teens demonstrating as tweens? What examples does the writer give? 1 para
Some of the social behaviors that tweens are demonstrating include the following: trying to hang out with people that might be a few years older than them, they don't want to wear anything that may look babyish, and they don't want to do anything that might make them look like a baby. One example the writer gives is girls wearing revealing clothing. Another example the writer gives is that middle school kids are becoming sexually active. A third example the writer gives is that girls start wearing makeup at an early age. They don't need to be doing stuff older kids would do, they just need to be themselves for now because their time will come.
Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para
One example where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner is when they start drinking and then they decide to drive. They don't think how that affects the other drivers, walkers, or themselves because it can kill them and others. Another example is when individuals drag race. When they drag race, they just want to win, but trying to win can be dangerous because they don't know what's going to happen to them or their vehicle while they're racing. If their vehicle goes one way, they might hit the person they are racing or they could flip their vehicle.
Journal Prompt 9. Discuss one poem and one short story similarity concerning characters, plots, settings, conflicts, or themes. 2 paragraphs
In "How Far She Went", the grandmother was set in her own ways. She did things her way and the way she was taught. She was raised to respect her elders. She tried to convince the bad people to let her and her granddaughter go.
In " A Good Man is Hard to Find", the grandmother is like the grandmother in the other story. She tries to protect herself and her loved ones, but it didn't work. They both had disrespectful grandchildren. The grandchildren were practically raised by the grandmothers.
Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs
The issuse that causes her to lose her self-esteem is when she is shot in the eye with a BB gun. She thinks the people won't see her as the cute little girl anymore. She also thinks that when they look at her that they will just stare. She is also doing poorly in school.
She mainly worries about how other people will think of her. She doesn't know how her daughter will react when she finds out that her mother's eyes are different from other people's. She is elying more on beauty than anything. Beauty doesn't have to be how you look.
