Journal Prompt 1. Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.

Two Narrative qualities which are in the poem "My Father in the Navy" and the short story "Araby" are the short energetic sentences that have vivid visual description of the brightness of love and adoration. The conflict in both writings is waiting on love and the darkness of life without the person whom they adore. Both use first person words like "I" and "we".

Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.

An example of conflict from Mayblum's story "The Price We Pay" of man vs nature is the ultimate conflict of man vs death. People fighting to live against all odds. The explosion of the planes into the tower buildings. The fires and smoke that occured due to the explosions. The ultimate colapse of the buildings. Although the deaths of the thousands of people that worked in the tower buildings was not facilitated by an act of nature; death is a part of the cycle of life and no matter how hard we try a part of nature.

Journal Prompt 3. Use this journal to build your introductory paragraph for Narrative Paper Assignment 1. Remember your introductory paragraph must consist of a clear thesis statement and clear supporting advanced organizers. 1 para.

When people enter into the healthcare arena for care, they are not always at their best. As nurses, we see people at their worst. Easing the suffering of loved ones makes a person feel good inside. Being the light in a sometimes dreary day for anyone is very uplifting for the giver and the receiver. Being a nurse can be very fulfilling. It isn't just a job, it's a calling.

Journal Prompt 4. Find an advertising slogan and write a descriptive paragraph about what an ad for that slogan should contain: discuss target audience, sensory details, and purpose. 1 para

There is no spit in Cremo!
Cremo cigars by American Tobacco, radio campaign on the new Columbia Broadcasting Service (CBS) in 1929

I chose this slogan because it caught my attention. I wasn't sure what Cremo was and why they would want to put spit into it in the first place. The next line of who was selling Cremo, I then understood what they meant by "no spit".
The target audience would most probably be males over twenty years of age, judging by the year of 1929. Women were only permitted by public opinion and certain government legislation to smoke in the privacy of their own homes. Cigar smoking is also perceived as a manly thing to do. In order to get more men to smoke Cremo cigars; the advertising company could have made it sound more appetizing to smoke them. Instead of stating that there isn't any spit in it, they could have said that Cremo cigars were smooth and mellow tasting, long lasting and have a pleasant odor. The smoke doesn't burn your eyes. We're not like those other brands! Also adding in the price stating what a good deal they were.

Journal Prompt 5. Read this article about bad advertisement. Discuss one advertisement you've seen or heard that you believe is poor advertisement--describe the ad so that a person reading your description could visualize the ad without seeing it. Then discuss why you believe the ad is bad. 2 para

I saw an ad in a professional magazine, that was advertising to entice you to come and work for them. There was a picture of a serious looking woman that filled the page, she was looking off to the side with an intense look on her face. There was alot of small writing on one side and the logo of the company at the bottom.
I didn't care for this advertisement because the woman in the picture is supposed to be a nurse but it's hard to tell because they have mostly just her head in the frame. She doesn't look like she's doing much of anything except looking stern. She looks too serious, I would like to work with someone that is happier. Also I would like to be cared for by someone that could smile and possibly make me feel better. I wouldn't want to work at this place or go there as a patient. The writing on the side is too small and wordy. The e-mail address that is in the ad isn't clear because the background picture blends in with the type.

Journal Prompt 6. Search the internet or a magazine to find a "good" advertisement. Describe the ad so that a reader may visualize it without seeing the ad. Discuss why you believe the advertisement is good. 2 para

I found an ad in a professional magazine, that was advertising you to come and work for them. There are some bright colors that catch your eye with the web site, the e-mail address and telephone number are clearly visible. There are seven people in this ad that you can clearly tell are health care professionals. They are wearing health care uniforms and stethescopes. The people do not take up the whole page and they are smiling. The type on the page is legible and get's it's point across, with little effort.
I would go to this hospital as a patient, which means that I would work there as well. The medical staff look happy yet professional. There are men and women of different races in this photo, which would mean that you would be treated fairly. The page is well organized with clear contact information. This would mean that the hospital is organized, which is always a good thing with any health care institution.

Journal Prompt 7. What social behaviors are teens demonstrating as tweens? What examples does the writer give? 1 para

The social behaviors that teens are demonstrating as tweens are; sexual behavior at a very young age, wearing provocative clothing; wearing too much make up and using foul language. Some examples that are used in the story Tweens are: her ten year old daughter replacing the posters of puppies and drawings from art class with posters of Leonardo diCaprio and Kate Winslett. Her daughter started reading teen fan magazines and movie ads with male teen idols in them.

Journal Prompt 8. In Jackson's "The Lottery," one social behavior that the town engages in is group think, which can be loosely defined as individuals in a group refusing to go against the group. What other examples (at least 2) can you think of where individuals engage in group think in a dangerous manner? 1 para

The most serious event of people who engage in group think and refusing to go against their group are street gangs, or on a alarger scale organized crime syndicates. There are some people in thier gang or "group" who do not agree with beating and robbing people and sometimes killing. They do it anyway so that they will be accepted within their group. They may also do what the gang says to do for fear of retaliation from their gang, either against themselves or their family. Another example of group think is cults. People who are in cults are brainwashed into thinking that what they're doing is right. There are many documented cases of abuse, especially of children. Children are physically abused (beatings), sexually abused, and mentally abused (brainwashing) not being allowed to think for themselves. The mothers in particular go along with this behavior because, if they don't then their children will be taken from them and since they know of no other way of life, they will be ostracised and loose thier community and their lifestyle.

Journal Prompt 9. Discuss one poem and one short story similarity concerning characters, plots, settings, conflicts, or themes. 2 paragraphs

The granddaughter June Star from the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” and the granddaughter from “How Far She Went” showed disrespect. The granddaughter June Star from the story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” shows disrespect to her grandmother by making snide comments about her having to travel with them so that she wouldn’t miss anything. She clearly doesn’t want to be with her grandmother. The granddaughter in “How Far She Went” disrespects her grandmother by yelling and arguing with her, she disrespects her grandmother’s house saying she’d turn the house upside down and shred the bible.
The grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” acted irresponsibly, as did the grandmother in “How Far She Went”. The grandmother in “A Good Man is Hard to Find” acted irresponsibly when the family is on a long car trip, she knows that a side trip will only delay them. She insists that her son Bailey turn the car around even though she wasn’t sure of where the cut off from the main road was; just so she could go and look at an old house. The grandmother in “How Far She Went” acted irresponsibly when her daughter Sylvie had been born by lying on the birth certificate and by not taking responsibility for her daughter when she was young and letting her run wild.

Journal Prompt 10. In Walker's Beauty, discuss the issues that caused Walker to lose her self-esteem. 2 paragraphs

Alice lost her beauty when she was eight years old. She was playing Cowboys and Indians with her brothers when one of her brothers shot off his B.B. gun and hit her in her eye. Her right eye becomes blind and grows a white cataract scar tissue on it. The children at her school call her names because of her "ugly" eye. All that Alice can see about herself is the "ugly" eye so she loses her self-esteem. She lets the childrens nasty remarks get inside of her and fester; so soon all that Alice is; is an ugly eye. Her marks begin to suffer and her family finally move her away from that school and put her into another one. Alice moves in wtih her grandparents and feels that she's being punished for being ugly; which plummets her self esteem even more.
Alice gets the cataract removed from her eye and starts to feel better about herself. She excels at school and later gets married and has a child. She puts so much emphasis on her physical beauty and ends up having anger and self-esteem problems her whole life. She cannot see the beauty within herself until her daughter makes a comment about her eye and how it looks like the world. Alice suddenly has a realization that she has been beautiful all along and is now grateful for her "ugly" eye and the leasons she has learned because of it.
