Cofer's "My Father in the Navy" and Joyce's short story "Araby" are autobiographical or narrative in nature. Review the chapter in the Longman concerning the rhetorical mode Narration (pgs. 109-116). Discuss two narration qualities you see in the poem and the short story collectively. 1 para.
Journal Prompt 2. Conflict and conflict resolution are narration qualities. Conflicts can be man vs. man, man vs. nature, and man vs. self. Describe one example from Mayblum's "The Price We Pay" that exemplifies one of the aforementioned areas of conflict. 1 para.
To me, the conflict in "The Price We Pay" is man vs. self. The narrator is battling with himself as he is trying to find a way to get out of this collapsing building. He is worried about leaving his friends and fellow co-workers while trying to survive this tragic event. His best friend refuses to go when they leave as a group. He tells the narrator that he is gonna stay behind. His friend asked him to send help. The narrator feels guilty for leaving him there; however, he knew that he had to keep going. He and the rest of the group, packed tight in what seemed to be a very narrow staircase, continued to try to make it to the bottom floor to escape. Making several stops along the way, he saw more and more people who were struggling to survive. He wanted to help them but he knew that it was almost impossible. Finally, he made it to the bottom floor. He was not sure if his friend had survived or not. Part of him felt like there was somthing he could have done while another part of him knew it was beyond his control. Still worried about his friend, he finally made it to a hotel and got to speak to his wife. A few days passed and he finally got word that his friend was alive. This made him feel a little better about his decision to keep going.

My dear child, I am writing this journal to you to give you guidance about safe sex. The first reason i want to talk to you about safe sex is unexpected pregnancy. Also, I want to persuade you to have safe sex because of the high risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Finally, I want to talk to you about having safe sex to help you stay on the right track for your future. Although i know you are smart enough to make your own decisions, I feel it is my job as your mother to instill this in you.

The audience for this particular advertisement is for families. Mainly the adults or young adults. The whole background is white. The item that is being advertised is blue with gold studs around the edge. It is leather. The slogan states "It's perfectly comfortabe (Even when everyone is staring at it)". It also states that it is the new look of comfort. The purpose of this advertisement is to sell a Lazboy sofa.

The advertisement that I picked is for soft scrub bleach cleaner. The whole page has a back ground of pink silk. In the top left corner there is a small outlining of a bath tub. In the bottom right corner there is a small picture of the product being advertised. Next to it, in small text, it says “Imagine a clean as smooth as silk.” In the bottom left corner in tiny text it says “2004 The Clorox Company, Use as Directed.”
I think this is a bad advertisement because it is very plain. There is not enough detail about what the company is trying to sell. The big pink, silk background makes me think they are trying to sell sheets or fabric. The actual picture of the product is too small and out of place. The product does not seem to be the main focus. This particular advertisement lacks detail. The picture of the product should be larger. Also, I would show an example of the product being used. Their slogan throws the whole advertisement off.

The advertisement that I picked is for GE appliances. At the very top it says “High fashion marries high tech.” The ad has a big picture of a couple standing in the kitchen. The woman is dressed in a pink dress and she is wearing heals. The man is wearing a suit. In his hand is a lap top. He is wearing glasses and there are pens in his shirt pocket. The woman is posed with one hand on her hip and the other on his shoulder. The man is standing straight up with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his lap top. The kitchen matched the woman’s dress. The appliances in the kitchen are very modern. They are shiny steel. All of the furniture is very modern also. All of the décor is very up to date. I think this is a good advertisement because the picture abides by the slogan. It says high fashion marries high tech. The woman is dressed up and looking very fashionable and her husband is more on the nerdy more sophisticated side. Their home has very fashionable decorations and it has very high tech appliances. I think this advertisement most definitely got its point across.

The writer tells about these so called "tweens" as young kids going throught the stage of puberty. She describes them as the types of music they are listening to, the way the young girls are starting to dress, and the attitudes that the children are developing. she is mostly talking about her daughter and the ways that she is changing into a teenager. she talks about her many attitudes and her many moods. she describes her almost as if she is growing up too fast.
